Akaki Tsereteli State University (ATSU) has been one of Georgia’s oldest and most esteemed public universities, located in Kutaisi.

The University of Kutaisi was not independent and became one only after the reorganization of Tbilisi State University, when the Soviet authorities decided so. In 1990, the decision was made to name the place after a well-known Georgian poet and public figure, Akaki Tsereteli. The extension of its academic event, more than infrastructure, occurred when it was merged with Kutaisi Niko Muskhelishvili State Technical University in 2006 and Sukhumi Subtropical Teaching University in 2010.
