Akaki Tsereteli State University (ATSU) has been one of Georgia’s oldest and most esteemed public universities, located in Kutaisi.

In 1930, it was previously established as a major academic and research institution and has since then been providing a lot of programs.

The University of Kutaisi was not independent and became one only after the reorganization of Tbilisi State University, when the Soviet authorities decided so. So, this was a period of transition, the university became one of those independent educational institutions. The relocation of the State Pedagogical Institute to Kutaisi in 1933 was one of the institutions. In 1990, the decision was made to name the place after a well-known Georgian poet and public figure, Akaki Tsereteli. The extension of its academic event, more than infrastructure, occurred when it was merged with Kutaisi Niko Muskhelishvili State Technical University in 2006 and Sukhumi Subtropical Teaching University in 2010.
